Refrigerated Transport from Antalya to Russia: Fresh Produce Guide
How is refrigerated transport to Russia planned for Antalya greenhouse produce? Temperature ranges for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and citrus, cold chain rules, documents and transit times to Moscow.
Refrigerated transport to Russia from Antalya means moving greenhouse tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and citrus fruit in temperature-controlled trucks (reefers) to Moscow, St Petersburg and other Russian markets. Most shipments travel by road through Georgia, and the transit time from Antalya to Moscow is approximately 10-11 days. The produce stays in an unbroken cold chain from the packing house to the wholesale market.
Russia is one of the most important markets for fresh fruit and vegetables from Antalya. If you are an importer, wholesaler or retail buyer sourcing Turkish greenhouse produce, this guide covers the whole process: temperature ranges by product, pre-cooling and loading rules, the document set and planning all the way to unloading at a Moscow market or distribution centre.
Why Antalya greenhouse produce goes to Russia
Antalya is Turkey's centre of greenhouse (protected) cultivation. In the plains of Kumluca, Demre, Serik, Aksu and Finike, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, aubergines and courgettes are harvested even in winter. In Russia, local production falls during the cold months, so demand for Antalya greenhouse produce rises from autumn to spring.
Geography matters too. A road shipment from Antalya to Moscow arrives much faster than sea freight from distant continents, which is a real advantage for products with a short shelf life. For a wider view of what the region exports, from vegetables to marble, see our overview of Antalya exports and their logistics needs.
Refrigerated transport to Russia: route and transit time
The most common route for refrigerated transport to Russia leaves Turkey at the Sarp border crossing into Georgia and enters Russia at Verkhny Lars (Upper Lars). From there the truck continues to Moscow; St Petersburg adds a few more days. A Ro-Ro ferry from Samsun or Karasu to Novorossiysk is an alternative, but for perishable produce the direct road route is usually preferred.
- Harvest, packing and pre-cooling: about 1 day
- Loading and Turkish export customs: the same day or the next day
- Antalya - Sarp - Verkhny Lars: about 3-4 days
- Road through Russia and destination customs: about 4-6 days
In total, approximately 10-11 days is normal. In winter, weather on the Caucasus pass and congestion at the border can extend this time. For the general Russia route, the border crossings and the Ro-Ro option, read our guide to freight from Turkey to Russia.
Temperature ranges by product
Temperature is the most critical variable in a reefer shipment. Every product has its own ideal carrying temperature, and the wrong setting can spoil a load within days. Tomatoes are sensitive to chilling injury and develop spots below about 10°C, while cherries and strawberries need temperatures close to zero. The table below shows indicative ranges for the products most often shipped from Antalya; confirm exact set points with the grower and your own quality team.
| Product | Indicative carrying temperature | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Tomatoes | 10-13°C | Sensitive to cold; set according to ripeness |
| Peppers | 7-10°C | Keep humidity high |
| Cucumbers | 10-12°C | Soften at low temperatures |
| Citrus (oranges, mandarins, lemons) | 3-7°C | Depends on variety |
| Cherries, strawberries | 0-2°C | Fast pre-cooling is essential |
| Cut flowers | 2-5°C | Sensitive to vibration and ethylene |
Carrying products with different temperature needs in the same reefer is risky. Tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers have similar ranges and can travel together, but loading citrus and tomatoes in one trailer will harm one of them. If a multi-compartment reefer trailer is not available, plan a separate truck.
How the cold chain is protected
The cold chain means that the product stays within the agreed temperature range from harvest to the buyer's warehouse. If the chain breaks at a single point, the load may be rejected on arrival. A successful refrigerated shipment from Antalya to Russia depends on these steps:
- Pre-cooling: the produce is brought down to the target temperature at the packing house. Warm produce cools slowly inside a reefer, and the centre of the pallet deteriorates.
- Vehicle check: before loading, the trailer must be clean, dry and already running at the target temperature.
- Airflow: gaps are left between pallets and below the ceiling, and the ventilation holes of the boxes are aligned.
- Temperature logging: the recorder in the trailer keeps data for the whole journey, and the record can be shared with the buyer on request.
- Door-open time: at border inspections and at delivery, doors stay open for the shortest possible time.
Packaging is part of the chain as well. Tomatoes and peppers for the Russian market usually travel in ventilated cartons or plastic crates, and cucumbers are often shrink-wrapped. Corner boards and strapping on each pallet prevent crushing and shifting over a ten-day journey. Pallet height should be limited so that the ceiling air duct of the reefer is not blocked.
Reefer trailer types, the ATP certificate and temperature recording are explained in more detail in our guide to refrigerated transport from Turkey.
Documents required
For fresh fruit and vegetables the document set is wider than for dry cargo. The standard set is:
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- CMR consignment note and TIR carnet
- Certificate of origin
- Phytosanitary certificate
- Export customs declaration, prepared on the Turkish side
- Quality and laboratory reports requested by the buyer
Russia is part of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and on the Russian side the importer's customs representative checks the documents. A missing or inconsistent certificate means the truck waits at the border. Phytosanitary rules and the list of approved suppliers can change, so check current requirements with your customs broker before every season. The full document set is described in our article on shipping documents for international freight.
Delivery to Moscow markets and distribution centres
Most Antalya greenhouse produce is delivered to the large wholesale markets around Moscow and to the distribution centres of retail chains. Agree unloading hours, the ramp slot and the acceptance criteria in advance. At acceptance, the buyer measures the product temperature; if it does not match the recorder data, there are grounds for a claim.
Refrigerated transport to Russia ends at the market ramp, so the harvest day, the loading hour and the buyer's acceptance time have to be planned together. This coordination is the main contribution of a good forwarder; our guide to choosing a logistics company in Antalya explains what to look for.
Season planning and truck availability
The greenhouse harvest in Antalya starts in autumn and runs until spring. In this period demand for reefer trucks leaving the region rises clearly, and finding a truck within the same week can become difficult; rates move with the market, the season and exchange rates. Buyers with regular volumes share a weekly loading plan with their forwarder in advance to secure capacity.
Return loads are also part of the plan. When a suitable load from Russia back to Turkey is available, the total cost of the truck falls, which helps the outbound rate. Planning around the whole round trip, not only the outbound leg, gives a more economical result.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a reefer truck take from Antalya to Moscow?
By road through Georgia, approximately 10-11 days. In winter, weather at Verkhny Lars and border congestion can extend the transit time.
How much does refrigerated transport to Russia cost?
There is no fixed rate: the price depends on market conditions, the season and exchange rates. Demand for reefers rises during the fresh produce season, so booking early helps with both the rate and truck availability.
Can tomatoes and citrus travel in the same truck?
It is not recommended. Tomatoes need about 10-13°C, while citrus travels at about 3-7°C; a single set point will harm one of the two. Without a multi-compartment reefer, plan a separate truck.
Which documents are needed for fresh produce imports from Turkey?
The basic set is the commercial invoice, packing list, CMR, TIR carnet, certificate of origin and phytosanitary certificate. Quality reports requested by the buyer are added, and EAEU import requirements should be confirmed before shipment.
