Freight transport to Kazakhstan from Turkey and China

BNK Logistics moves cargo from Turkey and China to Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Aktau and Atyrau as full truckloads or groupage. We choose between the northern route, the Caspian crossing and rail together with you.

Freight transport to Kazakhstan from Turkey and China

Kazakhstan is the largest country in Central Asia, and that size shapes every freight plan: a truck bound for Almaty and one bound for Astana or Aktau rarely take the same corridor. Turkey and Kazakhstan also share no land border, so every shipment crosses at least one transit country and often the Caspian Sea. At BNK Logistics we make three decisions with you before the cargo moves: which corridor to use, whether the load goes as a full truck or groupage, and whether the document set is complete before the first border.

Main delivery points in Kazakhstan

  • Almaty: the trade and distribution hub of the south, reachable by every corridor and the closest major city to the Chinese border.
  • Astana: the capital, in the north; the natural destination for the northern route through Russia.
  • Shymkent: close to the Uzbek border; often planned together with Tashkent shipments.
  • Aktau: the Caspian port where ferries arrive; the first stop for western Kazakhstan. The nearby port of Kuryk also handles ferry and rail traffic.
  • Atyrau: an energy-sector city on the northern Caspian, a frequent destination for project equipment and spare parts.

Routes from Turkey to Kazakhstan

Transit times below are approximate and depend on customs, ferry schedules and weather.

RouteApprox. transitBest forWatch out for
Northern route: Georgia → Upper Lars → Russia (Astrakhan or Orenburg direction) → Kazakhstan7-10 daysAstana and the north; direct road link, no ferryCongestion and winter closures at Upper Lars; Russian transit conditions
Caspian crossing: Georgia → Azerbaijan → Alat port → ferry → Aktau → Beyneu9-13 daysAktau, Atyrau and the west; avoids RussiaFerry schedules and Caspian wind; waiting time at the port
Iran → Turkmenistan → Uzbekistan → Kazakhstan10-15 daysShymkent and Almaty from the southThree transit countries; Turkmen transit permit regime
Rail: Baku-Tbilisi-Kars + Caspian + Kazakh rail network12-18 daysContainerised, bulky cargo with some flexibility on datesLast-mile road haulage from the terminal

For Almaty and Shymkent the corridors give similar results, so the choice usually depends on the border and ferry situation on the shipping date. We plan the Georgian and Azerbaijani legs together with our Caucasus transport operations.

Shipping from China to Kazakhstan

A large share of cargo for Kazakhstan originates in China, and this is part of the axis where most of our work is concentrated. The key crossings are Khorgos (road and rail, with Altynkol station on the Kazakh side), the closest major gateway to Almaty, and Dostyk-Alashankou, the long-established rail crossing used heavily by block trains and container traffic. Other road crossings serve northern and eastern Kazakhstan. Because China uses standard gauge and Kazakhstan 1520 mm broad gauge, rail cargo is transshipped at the border, and congestion at border stations can occur, so we build a buffer into rail plans. We can correspond with your Chinese supplier directly about loading dates, packing and documents. See our China freight and rail freight pages for more.

Full truckload or groupage

For up to about 33 euro pallets and 24 tonnes in a standard curtainsider, a dedicated truck (FTL) is usually the most efficient option: no transshipment and a more predictable delivery date. For a few pallets we look at groupage services towards Almaty and Astana; consolidation adds a few days, and pricing is typically based on loading metres, volume or weight. Refrigerated trucks are planned for temperature-sensitive goods and special trailers for heavy or out-of-gauge cargo.

How we plan a Kazakhstan shipment

  1. We listen: weight, volume, pallet count, packing, temperature sensitivity and the delivery date you need.
  2. We choose the corridor together based on destination city, season and border conditions. If a certain transit country must be avoided for commercial or insurance reasons, we discuss it at the start.
  3. We match the documents so that product description, package count and weight are identical on the invoice, packing list and CMR.
  4. We prepare the receiving side: the consignee's customs broker, unloading address and hours are confirmed before departure, in Russian where needed.
  5. We keep you informed through a tracking link showing loading, border exit, transshipment, estimated delivery, current location and shared documents such as CMR and invoice.

Documents checklist

Kazakhstan is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and applies the Union's common customs rules. The standard set is:

  • Commercial invoice and packing list
  • Certificate of origin
  • CMR consignment note and TIR Carnet for transit
  • Export customs declaration
  • EAEU conformity document (EAC certificate or declaration) depending on the product
  • Phytosanitary or veterinary certificate for food and agricultural goods
  • Transit and bilateral permits, driver visas; CIM/SMGS consignment note for rail

Requirements vary by product and are confirmed against current regulations for every shipment.

Seasonal planning

Winters in the steppe are long and harsh, with temperatures below minus 30 °C and blizzards that can close main roads; Upper Lars also closes periodically in winter. In autumn and winter, Caspian winds can delay ferries by several days. Summers exceed 40 °C. We add buffer time, keep a second corridor ready and recommend heated or refrigerated transport where the cargo requires it.

What affects the price

We do not quote a single rate for Kazakhstan. The price depends on the corridor and distance, FTL or groupage, ferry and port costs, transit permits, trailer type, fuel, season, exchange rates and insurance needs. Our quote states which corridor it assumes and whether ferry, permits and possible waiting time are included. For the regional overview, see our Central Asia freight page.

Frequently asked questions

How long does freight from Turkey to Kazakhstan take?

By road, about 7-10 days on the northern route through Russia, 9-13 days via the Caspian ferry and 10-15 days via Iran and Uzbekistan. Rail and intermodal solutions take roughly 12-18 days. Border queues, ferry schedules and weather can extend these times.

Which documents are required for Kazakhstan?

The core set is a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, CMR, TIR Carnet and export declaration. Depending on the product, an EAEU conformity document and phytosanitary or veterinary certificates are added. Requirements are confirmed before each shipment.

Which route is best for Almaty?

The Caspian crossing, the northern route and the Iran-Uzbekistan route reach Almaty in similar times. The choice depends on urgency, season and the border and ferry situation on the shipping date. For Astana the northern route usually leads; for Aktau and Atyrau the Caspian crossing.

Can I ship a few pallets to Kazakhstan?

Yes, groupage services to Almaty and Astana can carry smaller consignments. Consolidation adds a few days compared with a dedicated truck. As volume grows, a full truckload usually becomes more economical.

Do you ship from China to Kazakhstan?

Yes, China-origin cargo to Central Asia is one of our main areas. We consider Khorgos towards Almaty and, for rail, also the Dostyk-Alashankou crossing. We can deal with the Chinese supplier directly about loading and documents.

Can you ship to Kazakhstan in winter?

Yes, with a different plan. Because of steppe blizzards, Upper Lars closures and Caspian winds we add buffer time and keep a second corridor ready. Heated or refrigerated trucks are recommended for freeze-sensitive cargo.
