Most of Tajikistan is covered by the Pamir and Alay ranges, and the main road between the north and the south crosses passes above 3,000 metres and long tunnels. Two questions therefore shape every Tajikistan freight plan: is the cargo going to Dushanbe or to Khujand in the north, and through which Uzbek border crossing does it enter the country? Almost all cargo from Turkey reaches Tajikistan through Uzbekistan; for cargo from China, links through Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are assessed together. BNK Logistics plans Tajikistan shipments within this framework, based on the destination city and the season.
Delivery points
- Dushanbe: the capital and main distribution centre, reached from Turkey through the Sariosiyo crossing in the south-west via Uzbekistan's Termez-Denau road.
- Khujand: centre of the northern Sughd region and the Tajik part of the Fergana Valley, close to Tashkent and reached through the Oybek crossing.
- Bokhtar and southern cities: planned via or together with Dushanbe.
The Khujand-Dushanbe road runs through the Shahristan and Anzob tunnels and high passes. If cargo goes directly to Dushanbe or directly to Khujand, this leg is not used, so choosing the right entry point avoids an unnecessary mountain stage.
Customs position
Unlike Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan is not a member of the Eurasian Economic Union and applies its own customs legislation. Cargo transits Uzbekistan (and, depending on the route, Turkmenistan or Kazakhstan) under transit procedures, and a separate import clearance takes place in Tajikistan, usually handled by the consignee's customs broker. Conformity documents follow national requirements rather than EAEU certificates. Responsibilities are agreed at the outset according to the Incoterms used and confirmed against current regulations.
Routes from Turkey to Tajikistan
| Route | Approx. transit | Advantage | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dushanbe: Iran → Turkmenistan → Uzbekistan (Termez-Denau) → Sariosiyo | 11-15 days | Shortest entry to Dushanbe from the south; no mountain pass | Three transit countries; Turkmen transit permit regime |
| Khujand: Georgia → Russia → Kazakhstan → Tashkent → Oybek | 11-14 days | Can be combined with Tashkent groupage; access to the Fergana Valley | Upper Lars closures; high passes if continuing to Dushanbe |
| Caspian crossing: Georgia → Azerbaijan → Alat → ferry → Aktau or Turkmenbashi → Uzbekistan → Tajikistan | Longer than the land routes; depends on ferry schedule | Option that avoids Russia | Ferry waiting time; long road leg after the Caspian |
Times are approximate and depend on transit permits, border queues and the season. For Dushanbe, the southern route through Iran is often the most direct; we plan the Iranian leg together with our Iran freight operations. For Khujand, Tashkent is a key consolidation point, so the notes on our Uzbekistan freight page also apply. Tajikistan's rail network connects to the outside world through Uzbekistan's network; for containerised cargo, particularly from China and Kazakhstan, rail can be considered with road delivery for the last mile.
From China to Tajikistan
Tajikistan does border China, but the crossing there (Kulma) lies at very high altitude in the eastern Pamirs, operates seasonally and is far from the main population and trade centres. For Dushanbe and Khujand we therefore usually consider:
- Via Kyrgyzstan: Kashgar to Osh through Irkeshtam, then through the Fergana Valley towards Khujand.
- Via Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan: Khorgos or Dostyk into Kazakhstan, then Tashkent and Oybek to Khujand, or south to Dushanbe, by road or rail.
The status of crossings on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border has changed over time, so we confirm it for the shipping date when that route is used. We can correspond with your Chinese supplier directly; see our China freight and Kyrgyzstan freight pages.
Mountains and seasons
From November to March the Khujand-Dushanbe road can see avalanches, ice, chain requirements and temporary closures; Upper Lars may close on the northern route and snow can slow transit in northern Iran. We choose the entry point that avoids the mountain stage and add two to three days of buffer where it cannot be avoided. Around Nowruz in late March, borders in Iran and the region slow down. In summer, temperatures around Dushanbe and on the Turkmen-Uzbek transit exceed 40 °C, so we plan packing, pre-cooling and refrigerated transport for sensitive cargo.
Groupage or full truckload
Many exporters send only a few pallets to Tajikistan, and direct groupage services to Dushanbe are more limited than to Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan. The usual model for small loads is groupage to Tashkent with a separate vehicle for the last leg to Khujand or Dushanbe; transit is a few days longer, but costs are usually lower for regular small shipments. For large volumes, temperature-controlled cargo or firm delivery dates, a dedicated truck keeps the cargo in one vehicle, under one seal, across all three transit countries.
Documents checklist
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- Certificate of origin
- CMR consignment note and TIR Carnet
- Export customs declaration
- Tajik national conformity document depending on the product
- Health and phytosanitary certificates for food and agricultural goods
- Transit permits (including Turkmenistan) and driver visas
Requirements vary by product and are confirmed against current regulations. CMR carrier liability is limited to 8.33 SDR per kilogram, so separate cargo insurance is recommended for valuable goods.

Frequently asked questions
How long does freight from Turkey to Tajikistan take?
To Dushanbe via Iran, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, about 11-15 days; to Khujand via Kazakhstan and Tashkent, about 11-14 days. Transit permits, border queues and winter conditions can extend these times. Groupage via Tashkent adds a few days.
Which border crossing is used to enter Tajikistan?
Cargo from Turkey usually enters from Uzbekistan: the Termez-Denau road and Sariosiyo crossing for Dushanbe, Tashkent and the Oybek crossing for Khujand. The choice depends on the destination city and the crossing's schedule on the shipping date.
Which documents are needed for Tajikistan?
The core set is a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, CMR, TIR Carnet and export declaration. As Tajikistan is not an EAEU member, national conformity documents and health or phytosanitary certificates may be required. Requirements are confirmed before each shipment.
Can I send a few pallets to Dushanbe?
Yes. The usual model is groupage to Tashkent and a separate vehicle for the last leg to Dushanbe or Khujand. It takes a few days longer than a dedicated truck but is generally economical for regular small shipments.
Do you ship from China to Tajikistan?
Yes. We consider routes through Kyrgyzstan via Irkeshtam and Osh, or through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan by road or rail. The direct China-Tajikistan crossing is high-altitude and seasonal, so its availability is confirmed for each shipment.
Can you ship to Tajikistan in winter?
Yes. We enter Dushanbe from the south and Khujand from the north to avoid the mountain road with the Shahristan and Anzob tunnels. If cargo must continue from Khujand to Dushanbe, we add buffer time and recommend heated or refrigerated trucks for freeze-sensitive goods.
