Turkmenistan is the Central Asian country closest to Turkey by land, but its permit and border regime for foreign trucks makes planning more demanding than elsewhere in the region. Whether a gate is open to cargo, whether a foreign tractor unit may enter and which route it must follow can change from one period to the next. We answer these questions first and only then dispatch the truck. For the regional picture, see Central Asia freight.
What we do on Turkmenistan shipments
- Understand the load and destination: addresses, cargo type, packing, pallets, dimensions, weight and target date.
- Confirm entry rules: we check the rules for foreign-plated trucks on the shipment date, including any transshipment requirement.
- Arrange permits and visas: the transit permit, pass documents and driver visa are ready before the truck reaches the border.
- Match documents: description, package count and weight identical on invoice, packing list and CMR.
- State the costs: we say clearly whether transit permits, road fees, ferry and possible transshipment are included.
- Share a tracking link: border exit, transshipment, delivery dates, current location and documents in one place.
Routes from Turkey to Turkmenistan
Transit times are approximate and depend on permits, border queues, ferry schedules and season.
| Route | Approx. transit | Strength | Watch point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iran: Gürbulak or Kapıköy → Tabriz → Tehran → Mashhad → Sarakhs, Lotfabad or Bajgiran | 5–7 days | Shortest land distance; direct to Ashgabat, Mary and Turkmenabat | Driver and fuel planning in Iran; Turkmen permit and fee regime |
| Caspian: Sarp → Tbilisi → Baku/Alat port → Turkmenbashi port | 8–12 days | Avoids Iran; short last mile to Turkmenbashi and Balkanabat | Irregular ferry departures; wind delays |
| Via Kazakhstan: Aktau → Zhanaozen → Garabogaz → Turkmenbashi | 10–14 days | Alternative when Aktau sailings are more frequent | Long desert road with few services |
| Rail: Baku–Tbilisi–Kars + Caspian ferry + Turkmen rail | 12–16 days | Lower cost per tonne for containers and heavy project cargo | Wagon allocation and terminal-to-door planning |
Iran–Turkmenistan gates include Sarakhs–Saragt (towards Mary, Turkmenabat and transit to Uzbekistan), Lotfabad–Artyk, Bajgiran–Gaudan (closest to Ashgabat) and Incheh Borun–Etrek on the Kazakhstan–Turkmenistan–Iran railway. Which gates accept trucks, and on what terms, changes over time and is confirmed during planning. The Iran leg is handled with our Iran freight service.
Transit permits and transshipment
Foreign-plated trucks need a transit permit, usually taking a few working days, and drivers need a visa. Road-use charges, fuel price differences, insurance and disinfection may be collected at the border. Depending on the period, a foreign truck may drive to the delivery address; may have to follow a designated route such as Sarakhs–Farap in a daytime convoy with escort; or the cargo may be transshipped to a Turkmen truck at the border, or the trailer continued from Turkmenbashi port by a local tractor. Because this affects both time and cost, we confirm it at the quotation stage. Cargo transits Iran and Turkmenistan under customs seals with a TIR carnet.
From China to Turkmenistan
For China-origin cargo we build the plan around volume, urgency and destination. Rail options include entering Kazakhstan at Khorgos (Altynkol) or Dostyk and continuing via the Kazakhstan–Turkmenistan–Iran line or via Uzbekistan. By road, entry via Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan through the Farap gate is possible, subject to Turkmenistan's transit rules on the shipment date. We speak Chinese with suppliers and Russian with buyers. See China freight.
Why full truck loads dominate
Regular groupage services to Turkmenistan are limited, and permits and border charges are levied per truck, so most cargo moves as a full truck (about 33 euro pallets and 24 tonnes). For small lots we look at shared space on Ashgabat-bound trucks or combining with groupage planned for Uzbekistan. Heat-sensitive goods move in reefers, heavy machinery as project cargo, and dangerous goods with ADR-compliant vehicles and drivers.
Document checklist
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- Certificate of origin
- CMR consignment note and TIR carnet
- Export declaration
- Turkmenistan transit permit, pass documents and driver visa; Iranian transit documents where relevant
- Conformity certificates by product group; health and phytosanitary certificates for food
Turkmenistan applies its own import regime. Requirements are confirmed against current regulations for each shipment.
Seasonal planning
Summer temperatures in the Karakum can exceed 45°C, so we plan insulation, pre-cooling or a reefer. In winter, snow slows mountain roads in northern Iran and we keep the Caspian route as a fallback. Around Nowruz in late March, Iranian border processing slows. In autumn and winter, Caspian winds can delay ferries to Turkmenbashi.
What affects the price
Route choice, Turkmen permits and road fees, any transshipment and local tractor cost, ferry and port charges, waiting days, volume, special equipment, season, fuel and exchange rates. We do not publish fixed rates; every quote lists what is included.

Frequently asked questions
How long does freight from Turkey to Turkmenistan take?
Roughly 5–7 days via Iran, 8–12 days via the Caspian ferry and 10–14 days via Aktau. Rail-linked options take about 12–16 days. Permits, border queues and ferry timing can extend these ranges.
How is the Turkmenistan transit permit obtained?
It is applied for before the shipment with truck, driver and cargo details and usually takes a few working days. We do not send a truck to the border without it. Rules change often, so they are reconfirmed for each shipment.
Can a foreign truck enter Turkmenistan?
It depends on the period. Sometimes the truck drives to the delivery address, sometimes it follows a designated route with escort, and sometimes cargo is transshipped to a Turkmen truck. We confirm the rule for your shipment date when quoting.
Which border gates are used?
From Iran: Sarakhs–Saragt, Lotfabad–Artyk and Bajgiran–Gaudan; by sea: Turkmenbashi port; from Kazakhstan: Garabogaz. Which gates accept cargo changes over time and is confirmed during planning.
Is Turkmenbashi port a good option?
Yes, if the cargo is going to Turkmenbashi, Balkanabat or the west, or when Iranian transit is not suitable. For Ashgabat and the east, the Iran route is usually shorter.
Can I send a small load to Turkmenistan?
Regular groupage is limited, so most cargo moves as a full truck. For small lots we look at shared space or combining with regional groupage.
