Freight from China to Kazakhstan: Khorgos, Dostyk and Documents
Freight from China to Kazakhstan via Khorgos and Dostyk: which border crossing to choose, full truck or groupage, consolidating several factories, EAEU documents, CMR and TIR.
Freight from China to Kazakhstan by road is the journey from a factory gate in Urumqi, Yiwu, Guangzhou or Shanghai to the consignee's warehouse in Almaty, Astana, Shymkent or Karaganda. Most of this flow passes through the Khorgos and Dostyk (Alashankou) border crossings, where the cargo is cleared for export, transloaded if necessary, and continues its journey inside the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
This guide is written for two readers: the importer in Kazakhstan who buys from Chinese suppliers, and the Chinese exporter who has agreed to deliver to a Kazakh buyer. We cover crossings, truck options, consolidation and the documents needed before the truck reaches the border.
Where the cargo starts: China's production centres
The distance from the factory to the Kazakh border varies enormously. Suppliers in Xinjiang, especially around Urumqi, are relatively close to Khorgos and Alashankou, so the Chinese leg is short. Goods from the eastern and southern provinces, such as the Yiwu markets, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai or Ningbo, first travel a long domestic route across China to Xinjiang.
- Urumqi and Xinjiang: building materials, equipment, chemical products; the shortest leg to the border.
- Yiwu (Zhejiang province): consumer goods, household items, textiles; often many small suppliers in one purchase.
- Guangzhou and Shenzhen: electronics, furniture, clothing, spare parts.
- Shanghai and the east coast: industrial equipment, components, packaged products.
For this reason, always give the exact loading address when you request a quote, not simply "China". It determines the domestic leg, the crossing and the overall schedule. Chinese sellers help their buyer by sharing each factory's address and ready date early.
Freight from China to Kazakhstan: Khorgos or Dostyk?
Several road checkpoints operate on the Kazakhstan–China border. The main ones for trucks are Nur Zholy (opposite Khorgos on the Chinese side), Dostyk (opposite Alashankou) and Bakhty (opposite Tacheng). Rail crossings also run through Dostyk and through Altynkol, next to Khorgos. The right crossing depends first of all on the destination city.
| Crossing (Kazakh side / Chinese side) | Best suited for | Points to note |
|---|---|---|
| Nur Zholy / Khorgos | Almaty, Shymkent, southern Kazakhstan, onward transit to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan | The busiest road crossing; an electronic queue system is in use |
| Dostyk / Alashankou | Eastern and central Kazakhstan, Astana, Karaganda | A major rail and road hub; can be combined with rail |
| Bakhty / Tacheng | East Kazakhstan region | Used less often; confirm opening hours in advance |
We explain how the crossings themselves work, including queues and transloading, in a separate article on the Khorgos and Dostyk border crossings. Keep in mind that the checkpoints close periodically on public holidays in both countries and their working hours can change, so plan the crossing date with a margin.
How transloading at the border works
The procedure depends on the carrier and its permits. In some cases the cargo reaches the border zone on a Chinese truck, clears export formalities and is reloaded onto a truck that runs inside Kazakhstan. In others, the loaded truck crosses the border as a whole under a TIR carnet and drives to the consignee's warehouse without transloading.
Transloading adds one more handling of the goods, so for fragile cargo and equipment, correct packing, clear package marking and photos before and after reloading matter. Photos settle damage questions before the truck is unloaded.
Full truck or groupage
If the consignment fills the whole truck or nearly so, a dedicated full truckload (FTL) gives a predictable schedule: the truck is assigned to your cargo and does not wait for other shipments. For a few pallets, groupage (LTL) is more practical: you pay for the space you use, but transit is usually a little longer because of consolidation.
A common task for Kazakh importers is buying from several factories at once. Consolidation solves it:
- Each supplier hands over its goods with a packing list and marked packages.
- The forwarder checks the number of packages, weight and volume against the order.
- A loading plan is drawn up: heavy items at the bottom, fragile items separate, axle loads and unloading sequence taken into account.
- Goods from several suppliers travel in one truck with a single set of transport documents.
This saves on trucks and simplifies customs clearance for the consignee. For smaller lots, see our overview of consolidated freight from China to Central Asia.
Documents and EAEU customs
Kazakhstan is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, so import clearance follows EAEU rules: a common customs tariff, shared technical regulations and common conformity requirements. The basic document set for freight from China to Kazakhstan by road is:
- commercial invoice and packing list for each supplier;
- the sales contract between buyer and seller;
- CMR international consignment note;
- TIR carnet, if the truck travels under customs seal;
- Chinese export declaration, filed by the supplier or its customs broker;
- certificate of origin, if you claim tariff preferences or customs request it;
- EAEU certificate or declaration of conformity for goods covered by technical regulations.
HS codes, duty rates and certification needs are best agreed with a Kazakh customs broker before the goods are paid for. Chinese exporters can help by making invoice quantities and weights match the packing list exactly. Read more about the consignment note and the carnet in our article on the CMR consignment note and TIR carnet; the TIR system itself is described on the IRU website. Product lists and rules are updated from time to time, so check current requirements before every shipment.
If the cargo is dangerous, such as paints, solvents, chemicals or batteries, state the ADR hazard class in your first enquiry. Not every truck or route is suitable, and each case is assessed separately; see our ADR dangerous goods service.
What affects transit time
Freight from China to Kazakhstan loaded at a factory in Xinjiang and at one near Shanghai has very different transit times, so no single figure can be quoted. In practice the same factors shift the schedule:
- Queues at the crossing. At peak periods trucks wait longer than usual to enter the checkpoint.
- Holidays. Chinese New Year and the October Golden Week in China, as well as public holidays in Kazakhstan, change the working hours of the border and of factories.
- Document readiness. A discrepancy in the invoice or a missing certificate stops the truck at customs.
- Season. Winter snowstorms can restrict traffic on Kazakh highways.
Tracking the cargo on the way
When freight from China to Kazakhstan is transloaded at the border, the importer needs to know not only that the cargo will arrive, but also where it is and in what condition. At BNK each truck gets a tracking link that collects the documents, photos and loading videos. The buyer can forward it to the warehouse or customs broker, and the Chinese supplier can use it to confirm its goods were loaded correctly.
Frequently asked questions
Which crossing is better for cargo to Almaty?
For Almaty and the south of the country, Khorgos (Nur Zholy) is used most often because it is closer to the city. Dostyk is more convenient for the east and centre of Kazakhstan. The final choice depends on queues and crossing hours on the shipping date.
Can goods from several factories go in one truck?
Yes. Cargo from several suppliers is collected, checked package by package and loaded to a common plan. Each supplier needs to prepare its own invoice and packing list.
Is a TIR carnet needed for delivery to Kazakhstan?
If the truck crosses the border with cargo under customs seal, a TIR carnet is usually used. With transloading at the border, the carrier confirms the arrangement.
Can dangerous goods be shipped?
ADR cargo can be carried, but the hazard class and the safety data sheet must be provided at the start. The suitability of the specific cargo and route is assessed separately.
BNK Logistics (BNK Lojistik) organises freight from China to Kazakhstan with transloading via Khorgos or Dostyk, as a dedicated truck or as groupage, with consolidation from several suppliers and a tracking link for every truck.
