Freight from China to Uzbekistan: via Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan
Freight from China to Uzbekistan compared: the route via Khorgos and Kazakhstan versus Irkeshtam and Torugart in Kyrgyzstan, with transit documents, TIR and consolidation of several suppliers.
Freight from China to Uzbekistan by road almost always involves transit through a third country, because Uzbekistan and China do not share a border. Cargo from a factory in Urumqi, Yiwu, Guangzhou or Shanghai travels either through Khorgos or Dostyk and across Kazakhstan, or through the Kyrgyz crossings of Irkeshtam and Torugart and on into the Fergana Valley.
For an importer in Tashkent, Samarkand, Andijan or Namangan, the choice between these corridors affects transit time, schedule reliability and the document set. The same applies to a Chinese supplier who has agreed to deliver to an Uzbek buyer. Below we compare both options plainly: where each route is stronger, where it is weaker and what to prepare before loading.
Two corridors: via Kazakhstan or via Kyrgyzstan
The northern corridor runs from the Chinese side through the Khorgos (Nur Zholy) or Dostyk (Alashankou) crossings, then along the highway via Almaty and Shymkent to the Uzbek border near Tashkent. The southern corridor starts in Kashgar and crosses the high mountain passes of Irkeshtam or Torugart into Kyrgyzstan, and from there into Uzbekistan.
Both routes pass through a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), either Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan. Uzbekistan itself is not an EAEU member: it has held observer status since December 2020, but it clears goods under its own national legislation. In practice this means the cargo crosses Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan in transit under customs control, and import clearance takes place in Uzbekistan.
Freight from China to Uzbekistan via Kazakhstan
This is the main and most predictable option for Tashkent and the north-east of the country. After transloading and clearance at Khorgos or Dostyk, the truck drives south on Kazakh highways and crosses into Uzbekistan in the Turkestan region; Kazygurt, modernised in late 2025, is the key road checkpoint for trucks there. Check current truck arrangements on this section before dispatch.
The strengths of this route are flat highways, year-round traffic and well-developed infrastructure on the Kazakh section. Its weaknesses are the distance and the queues at the China–Kazakhstan border at peak times. We describe the first leg in detail in our article on freight from China to Kazakhstan, and the crossings themselves in our guide to the Khorgos and Dostyk border crossings.
Via Kyrgyzstan: Irkeshtam and Torugart
The southern corridor begins in Kashgar. Via Irkeshtam the truck reaches Osh and then the checkpoints into the Fergana Valley, which is the shortest way to Andijan, Namangan and Fergana. Torugart leads into central Kyrgyzstan towards Naryn and is used less often for Uzbek cargo.
The main features of this corridor come from the mountains. Both crossings are at high altitude, and in winter the weather and the condition of the passes affect the schedule. The Kyrgyz–Chinese checkpoints work to their own timetable and close on public holidays, so trucks are planned around the days the crossing is open. Irkeshtam has been modernised in recent years to increase capacity, but its current working regime should always be confirmed.
If the goods are made in Kashgar or western Xinjiang and the consignee is in the Fergana Valley, the southern corridor can save distance. For goods from China's east coast and consignees in Tashkent, the difference is usually not in its favour.
Route comparison
| Criterion | Via Kazakhstan (Khorgos / Dostyk) | Via Kyrgyzstan (Irkeshtam / Torugart) |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited for | Tashkent, Syrdarya, Jizzakh, Samarkand | Andijan, Namangan, Fergana |
| Transit country | Kazakhstan (EAEU) | Kyrgyzstan (EAEU) |
| Terrain | Mostly flat highways | High mountain crossings and passes |
| Seasonality | Year-round traffic; winter snowstorms on the steppe | Higher risk of weather delays in winter |
| Crossing regime | Main crossings with high capacity | Opening days and holiday closures shape the plan |
| When to choose | Goods from central and eastern China, large consignments | Goods from western Xinjiang, consignee in the Fergana Valley |
The final choice is made for each shipment: loading address, delivery address, season and the situation at the crossings in the week of dispatch.
Documents for import into Uzbekistan
Because the cargo crosses at least two borders, the documents must be equally accurate for the transit country and for Uzbek customs. The basic set is:
- commercial invoice and packing list for each supplier;
- the sales contract;
- CMR international consignment note;
- TIR carnet for transit through Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan;
- Chinese export declaration, filed by the supplier or its customs broker;
- certificate of origin;
- conformity documents, if the goods are subject to mandatory certification in Uzbekistan.
China, the transit countries and Uzbekistan all take part in the TIR system, so the TIR carnet remains the main tool for through transport. Read more in our article on the CMR consignment note and TIR carnet. Agree certification requirements and HS codes with an Uzbek customs broker before paying for the goods; lists and procedures change from time to time, so check current requirements.
For ADR dangerous goods, state the hazard class and provide the safety data sheet in your first enquiry. Transit through two countries means the truck and driver must meet the requirements along the whole route, and each case is assessed separately.
Combining cargo from several suppliers
Uzbek importers often buy from several factories at once: some goods in Yiwu, some in Guangzhou, equipment in Urumqi. Shipping each lot separately is expensive, but combining everything in one truck needs a clear plan.
- Each supplier hands over its goods with marked packages and its own packing list.
- Packages are checked against the order for quantity, weight and volume.
- A loading plan is drawn up, taking weight, fragility and unloading order into account.
- The consignment leaves as a full truck or as part of a groupage load.
If there is not enough volume for a whole truck, groupage is used; see our overview of consolidated freight from China to Central Asia.
How to prepare a shipment, step by step
Freight from China to Uzbekistan moves fastest when the main questions are settled before the truck arrives for loading. We suggest buyers and their Chinese suppliers work in this order:
- Addresses and cargo data. Give the exact address of each factory, the delivery city, weight, volume, number of packages and type of packing.
- Codes and certificates. Agree HS codes, duty rates and certification needs with the Uzbek broker before paying for the goods.
- Delivery terms. State in the contract who handles export clearance in China and up to which point the supplier is responsible.
- Route choice. Compare the Kazakh and Kyrgyz corridors for your city and season.
- Document check. Match invoices, packing lists and package marks before loading, not at the border.
This order removes most delays at customs.
Tracking and control
On a long transit route with transloading and two borders, the importer needs to see what is happening to the cargo. At BNK each truck gets a tracking link with the documents, photos and loading videos. The link can be passed to the broker in Tashkent to prepare clearance in advance, or to the warehouse to plan receipt.
Frequently asked questions
Which route is faster to Tashkent?
When freight from China to Uzbekistan is bound for Tashkent, the route via Kazakhstan is usually more convenient: it is flat, runs year-round, and the Uzbek border is close to the city. The southern corridor makes more sense for the Fergana Valley.
Where is the cargo cleared through customs?
Uzbekistan is not an EAEU member, so import clearance takes place at Uzbek customs. Across Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan the cargo moves in transit, usually under a TIR carnet.
Can goods from several factories be combined in one shipment?
Yes. Cargo from different suppliers is collected, checked and loaded to a common plan. Each supplier needs its own invoice and packing list.
Are there winter restrictions?
In winter the high mountain crossings in Kyrgyzstan carry a higher risk of weather delays, and snowstorms occur on the Kazakh steppe.
