FTL to Turkmenistan: Routes, Border Crossings and Documents

FTL to Turkmenistan from Turkey and China: Caspian ferry and Iran routes, Sarakhs, Farap and Garabogaz crossings, CMR and TIR papers, tracking and a rate request checklist.

BNK truck on an open road on a full truckload run towards Turkmenistan

FTL to Turkmenistan means a dedicated truck that loads at one or a few pick-up points and drives under one set of transit documents to Ashgabat, Mary, Turkmenabat, Dashoguz or Turkmenbashi. Turkmenistan is one of the more demanding destinations in Central Asia: few border crossings are open to foreign trucks, rules have changed several times in recent years and paperwork errors are expensive to fix on the spot.

This article is for European forwarders who need a reliable partner for that last part of the chain. It explains the Turkey-origin and China-origin routes we plan, the crossings in use, the document set, what to expect on transit time and the information we need in a rate request. Where a fact changes often, we say so.

Turkmenistan at a glance for freight planners

Turkmenistan is a neutral state and is not a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, so an EAC certificate or EAEU customs status does not carry over. Goods are cleared under Turkmen national customs rules, and trucks entering from Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan arrive under a transit procedure such as TIR. In practice, most import cargo is consumer goods, building materials, machinery and spare parts, food and textiles for traders and project contractors.

  • Ashgabat: the capital and main delivery point, close to the Iranian border.
  • Mary and Turkmenabat: on the main east–west road towards Uzbekistan.
  • Dashoguz: in the north, closest to the Uzbek border around Khorezm.
  • Turkmenbashi: the Caspian port where ferries from Alat (Baku) arrive.

FTL to Turkmenistan from Turkey: two corridors

From Turkey a truck can reach Turkmenistan through the Caucasus and across the Caspian, or overland through Iran. The choice depends on the cargo, the customer's compliance requirements and the situation at the borders on the shipping date.

CorridorRouteEntry pointStrengthsWatch out for
Caspian corridorTurkey → Georgia → Azerbaijan → Alat ferry → TurkmenbashiTurkmenbashi seaportAvoids Iranian territory; ferry crossing to Turkmenbashi is shorter than to Aktau or KurykFerry schedules and Caspian weather; waiting at Alat
Iran corridorTurkey → Iran → Sarakhs or another Iran–Turkmenistan crossingSarakhs and other southern crossingsDirect overland access to Ashgabat and MaryTransit permits, possible transshipment at the border, sanctions screening

The Azerbaijani state shipping company ASCO runs Ro-Pax ferries for trucks from Alat to Turkmenbashi; according to an OECD study of the Trans-Caspian corridor, the Baku–Turkmenbashi crossing takes about half as long as the crossings to Aktau or Kuryk. FTL from China to Turkmenistan

Our main line starts at factories in China. Trucks leave China through Horgos or Alashankou (Dostyk), continue across Kazakhstan and then enter Turkmenistan by one of two ways:

  • Through Uzbekistan: Kazakhstan → Uzbekistan → Alat/Farap crossing → Turkmenabat, Mary and Ashgabat. This is the natural route for eastern Turkmenistan.
  • Along the Caspian: western Kazakhstan → Temir-Baba/Garabogaz → Turkmenbashi and Balkanabat. Temir-Baba is Kazakhstan's only road crossing with Turkmenistan and was modernised in 2025.

Our article on freight from China to Turkmenistan covers the China leg, consolidation from several factories and the transfer at the Chinese border in more depth.

Border practice: what changes and what to expect

Turkmenistan closed its borders to foreign trucks in 2020 and reopened them for transit and bilateral traffic in November 2022 through a defined list of crossings, including Turkmenbashi port, Sarakhs, Farap and Garabogaz. Since then, practice has continued to evolve. Points we check for every FTL to Turkmenistan:

  • Whether the foreign truck may drive through to the consignee or whether the trailer or cargo must be handed over to a Turkmen carrier at the border. This has varied by crossing and by the nationality of the truck.
  • Working hours of the crossing; several Turkmen crossings operate during daytime only, so arrival time matters.
  • Road permits and driver visas, which the carrier must have before the truck reaches the border.
  • Route and weight rules inside the country.

We confirm these points when we book the truck, and if a rule changes during transit, you hear it from us first. For Iran-transit routes we screen the cargo, the parties and the route against the sanctions rules that apply to you and to us, and we do not offer ways around them; the Caspian corridor remains available as an alternative.

Documents for FTL to Turkmenistan

  1. Commercial invoice and packing list with HS codes, weights and package counts.
  2. CMR consignment note.
  3. TIR carnet for transit through the countries on the route; Turkmenistan uses the TIR system, and its customs service has been among the first in the region to pilot eTIR on the Azerbaijan–Turkmenistan–Uzbekistan corridor.
  4. Export declaration in Turkey or China.
  5. Certificate of origin; a preferential certificate such as EUR.1 only where an applicable agreement exists, which the consignee's broker should confirm.
  6. Product-specific certificates: phytosanitary or veterinary for food and plant products, and any conformity documents the importer needs for Turkmen clearance.

Ask the consignee to confirm the import requirements with their customs broker before loading. Our guide to the CMR consignment note and TIR carnet explains who issues which document.

Transit time, loading and tracking

We quote an approximate transit time per route and season rather than a single number, because the Caspian ferry, border working hours and any transshipment can add days that no carrier controls. A dedicated truck still gives you the most predictable option to Turkmenistan: no waiting for other shippers, one loading date and no handling at a consolidation warehouse.

Standard equipment is a curtain-sided trailer for up to about 33 euro pallets. Every vehicle gets a tracking link with the CMR and other documents, photos and videos from loading and later stages, which you can share with your customer. If your client's volume is smaller, our article on LTL and groupage freight explains the shared-truck alternative.

What to send with a rate request

  • Loading address or city, ready date and loading hours.
  • Delivery city in Turkmenistan and the consignee's customs arrangement.
  • Commodity, HS codes and value; whether anything is dangerous goods (UN number and class).
  • Gross weight, number of pallets, dimensions and stackability.
  • Trailer type: curtain-sider, box, temperature-controlled or open.
  • Incoterms and who pays which part of the route.
  • Any preference or restriction on the Iran or Caspian corridor.

Frequently asked questions

Which route is faster to Ashgabat?

It depends on the week. The Iran corridor is shorter on the map, but border handling can add time; the Caspian corridor depends on ferry departures. We compare both on the shipping date and quote the one that fits the cargo and your compliance rules.

Is Turkmenistan part of the EAEU?

No. Turkmenistan is outside the Eurasian Economic Union and applies its own customs rules, so EAEU documents and statuses do not automatically apply.

Can you load in China and deliver to Turkmenistan on one truck?

Yes, this is our main corridor: loading in China, transfer at Horgos or Alashankou (Dostyk) and road transport through Kazakhstan and, where needed, Uzbekistan.

Do you work as a subcontractor for European forwarders?

Yes. We regularly act as the local partner on the corridor, work under your references and report only to you if you prefer.
