Antalya Port vs Mersin Port: Which Is Better for Your Container?

Antalya port or Mersin port? A practical comparison of sailing frequency, inland trucking, transit time, reefer capacity and empty container depots for cargo from southern Turkey.

Antalya port is the nearest sea gateway for goods produced in the Antalya region, while Mersin port, one of Turkey's largest export ports, offers a much wider network of container services. For a container leaving a supplier in Antalya, the right port depends on sailing frequency, inland trucking, transit time and the type of cargo. There is no single correct answer, and a shorter distance to the port does not always mean a cheaper or faster shipment.

This guide is written for buyers who purchase from suppliers in southern Turkey and want to understand why a forwarder suggests one port or the other. We compare the two ports criterion by criterion and show which one usually suits stone, fresh produce and industrial goods. If you are new to sea shipping, our guide to container shipping from Turkey explains the basic terms.

Where Antalya port fits for exports

Antalya port is a multipurpose port that handles containers, bulk cargo, general cargo and cruise ships. It is close to the city and to the industrial zones around Muratpaşa, which keeps trucking time and cost low. Cargo from greenhouse areas such as Kumluca, Serik and Aksu reaches the port over a short distance.

The port is well suited to natural stone, marble blocks, bulk agricultural products and regional container services. However, the number of container lines and the frequency of sailings are limited compared with Mersin. Some destinations need a connection through a transhipment port, which can extend the transit time.

Mersin port: network and capacity

Mersin port is one of the busiest container ports in the Eastern Mediterranean. It offers direct services to the Far East, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Middle East. Sailings are frequent and most major shipping lines call there. Its reefer infrastructure and its connection to the free zone are also strong.

Among Turkey's Mediterranean ports, Mersin stands out in both container volume and range of services, while Iskenderun and Antalya act as complementary ports with a regional or cargo-specific focus. For this reason, many exporters in Antalya use Mersin for distant markets and Antalya for nearby, regular routes.

The road distance from Antalya to Mersin is several hundred kilometres, which means roughly one day of inland trucking by container truck. When this extra cost and time are balanced against the frequency of sailings, Mersin often becomes the stronger option for most Far East and Northern Europe shipments.

Port choice by product group

Fresh fruit, vegetables and reefer cargo

Most greenhouse produce from Antalya travels by refrigerated truck to Russia and Europe. Reefer containers are used for the Gulf, the Far East and some European markets. Here the cold chain and the transit time decide. If there is a direct reefer service, Antalya can be practical; if transhipment is needed, Mersin's direct services better protect the shelf life of the product. For road options, see refrigerated transport from Turkey.

Natural stone and marble

Marble blocks and slabs from the Antalya, Burdur and Isparta area are heavy, bulky and of relatively low unit value, so inland trucking is a large share of the total cost. When a suitable service exists, Antalya port is the more economical choice for this cargo. For regular block shipments to distant markets such as China and India, Mersin's sailing frequency is also considered.

Industrial goods and general cargo

For furniture, textiles, yacht equipment and machinery shipped as FCL or LCL, a direct service to the port of discharge and the total transit time matter most. For the Far East and Northern Europe, Mersin usually gives a shorter overall time.

Six questions to ask before choosing a port

  1. Which port has a direct service to your port of discharge, and how many sailings a week?
  2. Which option gives the shorter door-to-door time, including inland trucking?
  3. When freight, THC and trucking are added together, which port is more economical?
  4. Does the cargo need reefer, open top or special equipment, and can the port supply it?
  5. Where are the empty container pick-up and return depots, and is there a demurrage risk?
  6. Would an intermodal solution with rail or Ro-Ro work better?

The last question matters: combining road, rail and sea legs in one plan is sometimes more efficient than choosing between two ports. We explain this approach in our article on intermodal transport.

Empty containers and return depots

One detail that is often missed is where the empty container is collected and returned. If the shipping line releases empties only in Mersin, the container must first be brought to Antalya for loading and then taken back to Mersin full, which can double the inland trucking cost. Working with lines that have an empty depot in Antalya removes this cost.

A similar detail is the place of customs clearance. If the export declaration is opened in Antalya and the cargo is loaded in Mersin, a transit procedure is needed. In some cases declaring the goods directly at Mersin customs is more practical. Your supplier's customs broker should confirm this flow before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

Can containers be exported from Antalya port?

Yes. Antalya port runs container operations and is served by regional lines. If there is no direct service to the destination, the container is connected through a transhipment port.

How long does trucking from Antalya to Mersin port take?

By container truck it is usually completed within one day. Loading time, customs formalities and terminal gate hours affect the total.

Is Antalya port cheaper than Mersin?

Because trucking is short, it often looks cheaper at first. Once freight, sailing frequency and transhipment costs are added, the result depends on the cargo. Rates change with market conditions, season and exchange rates.

Which port has more reefer capacity?

Mersin is stronger in reefer plug capacity and direct reefer services. Antalya also accepts reefer containers, but capacity and schedules should be confirmed before shipment.
